Deploying LLMs in the Enterprise: What No One Tells You

From data governance to latency budgets, the real challenges of production AI are rarely covered in vendor demos.

Every enterprise AI demo looks the same: a clean prompt, an impressive response, a round of applause. What the demo never shows is what happens six months later when the model is in production, your data governance team has questions, and the latency is three times what your SLA allows.

The gap between LLM demo and LLM deployment is where most enterprise AI projects quietly die. Not because the technology doesn't work — it does — but because the organizational and infrastructure challenges are systematically underestimated.

Data governance is the first wall most teams hit. LLMs trained on or fine-tuned with proprietary data create immediate questions about data residency, model ownership, and what happens when an employee leaves. These aren't hypothetical concerns — they're the questions your legal and compliance teams will ask before any production deployment.

Latency is the second. A model that takes four seconds to respond is fine for a research tool. It's a dealbreaker for a customer-facing application. Inference optimization, caching strategies, and model selection all need to be part of the architecture conversation from day one, not retrofitted after launch.

The teams that succeed at enterprise LLM deployment treat it like any other infrastructure project: requirements first, architecture second, implementation third. The teams that fail treat it like a science experiment that somehow ended up in production.
